Man Says He Killed Woman for Trying to Make Him Straight

Gutierrez

Chicago media and police report that the motive for last week's murder of a funeral home worker was an attempt by the victim to convert a gay man to be straight.

Mary Stachowicz, 51, was apparently trying to pressure Nicholas Gutierrez, 19, about his sexuality. Gutierrez lived above the funeral home, 3630 W. George, where Stachowicz worked.

Gutierrez was charged with first-degree murder, burglary and attempting to conceal the murder. He could get the death penalty.

He told police she asked "Why do you [have sex with] boys instead of girls?" Apparently, this argument reminded him of a pattern with his own mother. Gutierrez is a ward of the Illinois Dept. of Children and Family Services, which has many GLBT kids in the system who have been kicked out by birth families. DCFS has its own dismal record of caring for the needs of GLBT wards of the state.
